June 12th is an annual holiday honoring the Independence of Filipinos from Spanish colonial rule in 1898.
Independence Day represents liberty and solidarity to commemorate past heroes for sacrifices that contributed to the Philippines ultimately achieving its independence.
Brief History of Independence Day in the Philippines
Filipinos experienced tragedies and abuses that tormented the country during the Spanish Era. With the mistreatment, several individuals decided to oppose such injustices.
Writer, scholar, and political activist Jose Rizal has conveyed the abuses the Spanish committed against the Filipinos.
Andres Bonifacio led the Katipunan, a group aimed to overthrow the Spanish colonial government. August 1896 saw the start of a revolution, and Jose Rizal was executed on December 30, 1896, as punishment for his involvement, even though he had first advocated for reform rather than revolution.
Such events sparked the flame of nationalism in the people during that time, inspiring more individuals to defend their country. Finally, on June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo had the Philippine flag as a sign of declaration.
The Philippine Flag was designed by Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa. The flag has three stars signifying the three major island areas: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. It has an eight-rayed golden sun representing the first eight Philippine provinces that fought against the Spaniards.
After General Aguinaldo raised the flag, the Philippine's national anthem, “Lupang Hinirang,” was sung for the first time.
President Diosdado Macapagal issued June 12 as Philippine Independence Day by Proclamation No. 28 in 1962.
